Pezhvāk, which means “reflection” in Persian, is a journey to merge Persian music with Western musical idioms. This piece tries to discover what happens if the characteristics and expression of the surnāy (a double-reed instrument found in Persian, Turkish, and Arabic traditions) are applied to the oboe. The music brings together multiple temperaments and scale systems, including twelve-tone equal temperament, just intonation, and the Persian Dastgāh.

The Surnāy samples used in this piece are taken from the track “Reng” from the album Music of Northern Khorāsān: Sornā Playing, released by the Mahoor Institute of Culture and Arts.
